Book Club Discussion! (Happy City: Transforming Our Lives Through Urban Design by Charles Montgomery)
At the Bike Kitchen - in the student room behind the shop!
Please enter through the regular shop entrance. 6.30-8pm :)
Once a month, we'll gather to chat about a selected book and its themes together.
Everyone is welcome! RSVP is appreciated (this helps us to know how many people to expect on the session), but drop in is also fine!
After a brief introduction to the main themes of the book, we will read selected excerpts and discuss them together. While it is helpful to have read the book beforehand it is not required!
After decades of unchecked sprawl, more people than ever are moving back to the city. Dense urban living has been prescribed as a panacea for the environmental and resource crises of our time. But is it better or worse for our happiness? Are subways, sidewalks and tower dwelling an improvement on the car-dependence of sprawl?
Award-winning journalist Charles Montgomery finds answers to such questions at the intersection between urban design and the emerging science of happiness, during an exhilarating journey through some of the world’s most dynamic cities.
You can find a copy of this book at UBC Library or VPL. If you're having trouble finding it, feel free to reach out to us at programs@thebikekitchen.ca, we'd be happy to help!!
